I don't really remember where the thought came from, but I do remember thinking "What about a shovel... but for war." Thus, the War Shovel was born. So this image just above is a shot of the sculpt in Zbrush.

A quick import into Maya and setting up to remodel using the Quad Draw tool... The semi-transparent plane is there to distinguish where the centre of the model is, since I'll be retopologizing only half and then mirroring. The plane itself is just given a new Lambert material with about 60% transparency and a slight red hue to help it stand out, then set to Reference in it's own layer.

Alright, so far so good. I'm not really trying to keep the polygon count down, I'd rather have some definition in those bumps.

Managed to make it all the way down, but these spikes are killing me. Insert internal screaming right about here.

Ay, the retopo is done. The edges look a little strange but that's what the normal map is for.

A quick bake out of a normal map and ambient occlusion and the diffuse suddenly becomes a lot easier...

Also... lighting is important. Setting up to render out images.

Voila~ A shovel
